RIP Dick Smith, 92 - The Godfather of Make-up! Very sad day, he was absolutely one of my inspirations. I’ve got FX HowTo books & VHS videos he made. And I know he is Tom Savini’s mentor (and I love everything Savini does).
Richard Emerson “Dick” Smith (June 26, 1922 – July 30, 2014) was an American special effects make-up artist known for his work on such films as Little Big Man, The Godfather, The Exorcist, Taxi Driver, and Scanners. He won a 1985 Academy Award for Makeup for his work on Amadeus and received a 2012 Honorary Academy Award for his career’s work.
Smith was one of the early pioneers of combining make-up with on-set ‘practical’ special effects, starting with The Exorcist in 1973. Though many of Smith’s make-up effects were so well conceived as to go undetected, Smith’s expertise gained prominence and acclaim through the variety and ingenuity of his many effects for The Exorcist. DIY Cheap and Easy Crystal Ball Halloween Decor Tutorial from Flamingo Toes here. Clever tutorial using Christmas balls and inkjet transparency film/paper. I use transparency a lot in my artwork because you can layer it in collages (non affiliate Amazon link for the film here). Cheap Thrills Tip: print out a black and white portrait on transparency film and back it with neon or white cardstock for instant art.
